How To Teach Your Son/ Daughter to Swim
Learning to swim should be a pleasant experience for any young boy or girl and is a gradual
process learnt over a period of anywhere from one week to several months.
Never should children be forced or bullied into swimming as this will make them fear the experience
even more, and possibly discourage them from what should always be a pleasurable learning experience.
It never ceases to amaze me that there are still people out there in the world that cannot swim.
As the world is over 70% water it seems logical to learn to swim if only from a survival perspective.
Most animals on this planet can swim if pushed, without too much trouble, even Giraffes!
( Don`t ask me how!)
They say the only animal that cannot swim is the pig because they panic and keep kicking themselves in the chin until they sink for good.
The purpose of this blog is to share a simple, effective method of teaching your own children how to swim.
As kids become more confident in the water, they learn to relax which is half the problem solved
to start with.
Nervous or rigid bodies tend to sink like stones whereas a relaxed body, breathing in out calmly
will always float, especially in salt water.
I believe one of the reasons people drown is that they panic, lose all control and ultimately sink.
In salt water especially because of the physiology of the human body all you need to do is relax, breath deeply throw yourself on your back and you will float anyway.
I remember this from a holiday in Greece years ago when I swam out almost a mile before running into problems. The fact that I survived to write this blog, merely gives credit to my theory.
The technique that I suggest to teach your child to swim relies very heavily on one swimming accessory which come in a variety of colours but all rely on the same Backpack floating belt principle.
NB: Never leave your child alone in the water wearing this device, in case they get into difficulty.
The Process
The great thing about this device is that is gives kids confidence in the water.Like anything else in life, as their confidence grows, fear diminishes and their ability to learn grows.
Once belted on to the child they can move about in the water with virtually no fear.
Always start the process with all the floats on the belt in place, this will give maximum buoyancy
and help them float around the pool easily.
Now as they become more confidant in the water swimming with the help of this device the idea is to gradually take away one by one the layers of the float behind.
There is no hard and fast time frame in doing this, it depends entirely on the child´s confidence in the water.
After say, a few days of using the device fully loaded, you can safely remove one piece of the float from the belt (preferably without the child noticing). The floats are easily detached from the belt.
Then attach the belt again and let them practice and get accustomed to the reduced backpack.
Again, within a certain time frame, once they are 100% confident swimming with the backpack it will be time to remove another piece of foam.
It is important to monitor the progress of the student in the water and to give basic encouragement in terms of kicking the legs and moving the arms.
But this is, without doubt one of the safest, pleasurable and most natural ways of learning how to swim.
The process is repeated until the backpack contains only one float.
Once your child is confident swimming with only one float they are basically swimming with very little support.
Again, once there is complete confidence in the water swimming with one piece of foam, that piece of foam may be removed.
You can still attach the belt to retain the feeling of confidence, but without any foam in place.
Congratulations, you have just taught your little one how to swim.
The great news is you only need to teach your son or daughter to swim once.
After that, they will always enjoy water oriented experiences with the family at the beach or swimming pool for life.
As a parent this whole teaching process may leave you with a lasting feeling of satisfaction knowing that you have passed on to your sibling a very useful and potentially life-saving past-time.
If you don´t have any children you best buy a dog!
